What Is E-Cycling?
The term
E-Cycling refers to Electronic Recycling - the environmentally friendly and
cost-effective disposal of unwanted, obsolete information technology
equipment.
The U.S.
National Recycling Coalition projects that by 2008 the average North American
personal computer will be replaced every two years, and at least 500 million
workstations will be obsolete. This is a significant problem. Computers, like
many other electronic devices, contain hazardous materials, including lead and
mercury, so their responsible disposal is a becoming increasingly important.
Computer
and I.T. equipment recycling is achieved in many ways. Still an evolving
industry,
it is
characterized by the following processes. Equipment is:
* Reconditioned,
upgraded and reused
* Demanufactured
to subsystem levels and specific parts reused
* Demanufactured
to component levels and basic materials recovered
At Dominion
Business Machines we work with industry partners who provide utmost efforts
to adhere to the recommendations of the Basel Convention and
environmentally responsible E-Cycling standards. We provide
complete reuse and recycling of all materials we
handle.
Every piece of equipment
received is upgraded and resold into use, or processed
(dismantled
to component or raw
material levels) by an Ontario Electronic Stewardship processor or
refurbisher.
We have
been involved in the recycling and reuse of office equipment ever since our
company was started over one hundred years ago. Throughout the twentieth century
we have recycled all kinds of office equipment for Clients such as the City of
Toronto, The Canadian Armed Forces, The Salvation
Army, University of Toronto, and Goodwill
Services.
We diverted more
than 400,000 Kilograms, (800,000 Pounds) of unwanted
electronics from
the waste
stream and into recycling and reuse programs
in 2009
Our E-cycling Services
E-cycling
projects both large and small normally begin with an assessment
of equipment
that is no
longer needed, whether it be a few computers in a small office, or
a large
number of workstations and servers in a corporate
client, municipal or
healthcare
facility.
Onsite Inventory and
Assessment
At Dominion
we help Clients realize the maximum value of unwanted I.T. Assets
through brokered resale, demanufacturing, even Tax and Donation
advice.
We work
closely with Client I.T. Teams to offer maximum benefits
for equipment under
consideration.
Removal and
Logistics
Once a
project is undertaken the Dominion E-Cycling team will attend onsite, oversee or
assist sorting and demanufacturing, including hard drive removals, then
assist with staging, loading
and
transportation.
Care
is taken to minimize the impact on a Client's work
environment, and
our removal schedules are often coordinated with
the deployment of new equipment.
Certificates of Disposal/Destruction
Dominion
Business Machines can provide written and auditable records
describing
equipment
removed, shipping trails, data destruction, and other Ecycling
Processes.
Data Destruction/Assumptions of
Liability
Strict
security guidelines exist for many organizations regarding data stored on
decommissioned computers and hard drive subsystems. At Dominion Business
Machines we advise clients of appropriate industry and military level data
destruction standards and practises, and we assist in their
implementation.
Our Data
Destruction and E-Cycling Clients include financial, government,
and health
care organizations who routinely handle sensitive information.
We have
never experienced an incident of unauthorized data retrieval or misuse.
Custom E-Cycling
Projects
At Dominion
Business Machines we realize that the replacement and disposal needs
of
organizations vary. We are proud of the way we approach each project:
consulting
and working closely with the I.T. teams of small business,
corporate, institutional
and
municipal clients. If and when special services are required we
are happy to
provide
them.
If you are
thinking about throwing unwanted computers or information technology
equipment
into the
garbage please contact
us first. No matter how large or small your company or office,
we will be
happy to help you with your E-cycling needs.
